OPPO BDP-93: The Pros

  • Image Quality

The image quality of the BDP-93 is fantastic. It’s razor sharp, super clean, and doesn’t struggle with even the most difficult colors. The image quality here is well above the generation standard, surpassing virtually all competitors.

  • Sound Quality

Compared to other Blu-ray players the Oppo BDP-93 is streaks ahead, with audio quality indistinguishable from many hi-fi systems except the most high-end. This means it could realistically take the place of a home hi-fi system, in addition to its role as a Blu-ray player. This isn’t something you could say about most Blu-ray players on the market.

  • Response Times

This player is much faster than lower end models. Your disc will have finished loading almost by the time you sit down in your seat, and the disc tray opens as soon as you press the button. It may sound small, but it can make a big difference when you’re using a player often!

  • Easy Netflix Setup

Many Blu-ray players make Netflix setup a hassle. However, the Oppo makes the process quick and easy, with a simple pass code that you enter through your PC giving access to your Netflix queue within a matter of minutes.

  • Design

This is a beautiful player that’ll really complement any living room style. It makes use of a very simple display in a slim, black case.

  • Build Quality

This player feels like it’ll last a lifetime, with a robust frame and solid buttons, as well as a sturdy disc tray: something you want from a more expensive Blu-ray model. Other players can feel flimsy, and seem like they’re only meant to last a year or two at most – just long enough for the next model to be released.

  • Format Support

Another great feature of the Oppo BDP-93 is that it can play so many media formats. It’s not limited to the usual range of Blu-ray and DVD discs, but can handle almost all types of home-burned material whether on DVD or CD. This is fantastic news for those who want more from their Blu-ray player: the Oppo serves as a whole media center for home movies, photographs and music.

  • Firmware

Oppo update their firmware regularly, and make sure that any bugs really do get fixed. With many players, problems are never really resolved. Oppo, however, ensure that customers are taken good care of.

  • 3D Ready

In line with the rest of the current generation of Blu-ray players, the Oppo is capable of playing 3D media. This means that you can enjoy the latest 3D films with the best picture quality available. Even if you don’t yet own a 3D TV, buying a 3D player will future-proof you against any upgrades.

  • Remote

The remote is simply one more jewel in the Oppo crown. Unlike almost all other Blu-ray players, the BDP-93 has a remote flawless in design. Buttons are robust and responsive. Better still, the remote is internally lit. This means that you can use it in the dark without a problem.

OPPO BDP-93: The Cons

  • Wi-Fi

One of the few flaws in the BDP-93 is that it doesn’t have an internal wireless device. Wi-Fi can only be obtained through the included dongle, which adds to the players depth measurement by a couple of inches. Fortunately, the dongle fits in at the back of the player which means that its elegant design isn’t spoiled. However, it wouldn’t been nice if Oppo had worked on built-in Wi-Fi.

  • Eject Button

Although a minor criticism, the eject button on the player is a little hard to find in the dark. This might be a trade-off for more stylish looks – and it’s probably worthwhile if so – but perhaps an alternative could have been found. Fortunately, the eject button on the remote is internally lit, so it’s possible to use this instead.

  • Price

For some, the price will certainly be a disadvantage. The RRP is $500.00, which is far above the majority of the competition. However, this product really does scream quality, both visually, and in practice. There is scarcely a flaw to be found. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.

Is The OPPO BDP-93 Worth Buying?

When looking at a device of this standard, finding flaws is really like searching for needles in a haystack. There is almost nothing wrong with this player, the only real issue is the price. For movie aficionados, this won’t stand in the way, but for those whose budget is slightly tighter, it might be a tad out of range. There are good alternatives for a better price, but this player takes the crown for all-round quality.
