If you’re shopping for the perfect speakers to fit your living room, then it’s not just the technical specifications you need to consider. The design of the speakers is also a huge factor: do they fit in with your living room style, are they going to be easy to set up? Here’s a guide to the main types of home theater speakers currently available to buy.
1) Subwoofers
No matter which kind of speaker you get in your home theater system, you’ll usually also need a subwoofer to go with it. Without one, you just won’t get the full effect of any sounds you play through your system. Subwoofers are bigger than other speakers: they need to be in order to create low-frequency sounds. The good news, however, is that our ears can’t recognize where bass sounds are coming from, so the larger subwoofer can be placed anywhere you need in your living room to keep it out of the way.
2) Floor Standing Speakers
If you’ve got a larger space to fill then floor standing speakers are an excellent option. Although all speakers vary widely depending on the specific model you ultimately choose, floor standing speakers have the potential to offer louder, fuller sound (though this often comes at a price!)
3) Soundbars
Don’t assume that good things can’t come in small packages! Soundbars are becoming more and more popular thanks to the fact that they can do so much in such a small device. Soundbars are long, thin bars that can be placed above or below your flat screen TV (usually with a subwoofer to be placed elsewhere – see above). They’re unobtrusive and will blend in with most HDTV designs. All of the speakers are housed within the soundbar, at various angles and with a number of features that enable them to create a “virtual surround sound” effect. This may not match true surround sound, but it’s an excellent option for those who want to save space and money.
4) Compact Surround Speakers
Modern home theater speakers can now come in compact designs that’ll still produce an excellent range of sounds. Because of their size, they are best for handling mid to high-frequency sounds. Place the assortment of speakers correctly around the room and you’ll achieve that true surround sound effect that makes you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action.
These are by no means the only kind of home theater speakers available on the market: speaker technology is advancing all the time, and it’s guaranteed there’ll be a speaker size and style to fit your audio requirements and your living room style.
